Operations Assessment

Hospitals have an imperative to maintain efficient organizations while providing care at the lowest possible cost. In today's environment of rapid change, most need external, objective assistance in seeing the forest for the trees. MEDCO, drawing on its experience of helping many hospitals solve problems, provides a cost effective process to identify cost and service improvement opportunities.

The first step is determining the goals for the assessment followed by senior management orientation meetings. After that, information is gathered and compared to our database of performance indicators and cost information (labor and non-labor). MEDCO consultants interview Department Managers to confirm findings, validate comparative data and determine the magnitude of real, implementable improvements in costs and service levels.

The process is function and department focused, assessing improvement opportunities where the costs are incurred.



The Operations Assessment process spans a period of approximately eight weeks and involves interviews with each department manager as well as focus meetings to brainstorm areas of opportunity. During this process, MEDCO consultants:

  • Review departmental organizations
  • Assess the effectiveness of core processes
  • Benchmark labor and non-labor costs
  • Review staffing levels - FTEs, skill mix and coverage
  • Identify barriers to optimal performance
  • Develop realistic cost reduction targets
The findings are fully documented and provided to the hospital in a Management Action Plan ( MAP) that is reviewed with senior and department management.
